Harford Co. Just a feeler about keyholing. I was shooting my brand new Mossberg MVP Predator (5.56 w/threaded 18.5" medium bull barrel) yesterday. After I zeroed it in at 75 yrds ( I plan on stretching it out, just didn't have time), I noticed the shots were leaving oblong holes in the paper (keyholing).
WebApr 2, 2024 · I've never seen keyholing except for transonic issues at 900+y with a .308 that was running out of steam. Keyholes at 100y? And it shot okay in the same rifle before? The only ammo that will keyhole like that is Aguila 60 grain Sub-sonic unless you have another issue.....for 40 grain to do that I will agree that there is another issue...I've shot 500+ rounds at a time and never had any 40's keyhole even if gun and barrel were dirt dirty...

If the grooves in the bore become heavily fouled you will be firing, in essence, a smoothbore. Other possible causes of keyholing, very unlikely in your case: The bullet is too small for the barrel and doesn't get spun up.
