WebSep 23, 2024 · I took an elk with my 7-08 loaded with the 131gr Hammer Hunter over Varget. At 340 yards the shot was a little forward. It broke the near femur, through the chest, broke the far femur, and exited. Plenty of power for elk. I've never hunted one, but I am told by many that they also use 7mm-08s for elk, but that seems a bit on the light side to me. YMMV. A .308 is a little bit of a step up from a 7mm-08, but not a big step.

I will say the trigger isn't quite where I'd like it, but its more than serviceable with an aftermarket spring... also, Timney is making an aftermarket trigger for them now as well.
