Slow solar wind

WebbFast and Slow Solar Wind. Ulysses, with its near polar 1.4 by 5.4 AU orbit, has given us a graphic picture (at the right) that solar wind comes in two states: an irregular slow wind with typical speeds of 400 km/s and a smooth fast wind with a speed of ~750 km/s.

Webb9 apr. 2024 · Over the past 24 hours the solar wind speed has stayed almost constant with values of about 350 km/s. Around 22:00UT a forward shock wave has been observed in the in situ data with interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) values up to 13 nT. The shock wave was followed by the arrival of the interplanetary coronal mass ejection. WebbA theory for the origin of the slow solar wind is described. The lowest speed detected was 156 km s −1. Ten of the lowest-speed events were analyzed in detail.

WebbIt is also found that slow normal CMEs experience the same amount of erosion, regardless of the background wind density. Moreover, as the initial velocity increases, so does the influence of the wind density on the erosion. We found that increasing the CME speed leads to a higher overall erosion due to stronger magnetic reconnection.
